Vegetarian vs Vegan


Vegetarian vs vegan raises important question on the difference between the two terms. Traditionally the term vegetarian was used to describe a person who followed plant based diet and avoided all animal based food from their diet. These days however, the term vegetarian is used broadly. Depending upon the level of adherence to animal free diet, there are a variety of sub-categories of vegetarian diet. As you can see, vegan is the only 'pure' vegetarian diet.

SEMI-VEGETARIAN:The term semi-vegetarian is usually used to describe someone who does not consume animal flesh but includes dairy products, eggs, chicken, and fish in their diet.

OVO-LACTO-VEGETARIAN:Ovo-lacto vegetarian is a vegetarian who does not consume meat, poultry, fish, and seafood, but does consume eggs and milk. This is the largest group of vegetarians.

OVO-VEGETARIAN:Ovo-vegetarian is a term used to describe someone who refrains from all animal based foods bur does consume eggs.

LACTO-VEGETARIAN:Lacto-vegetarian is a term used to describe someone who avoids all animal based foods but does consume milk and other dairy products.

PURE VEGETARIAN (VEGAN):Those who strictly follow plant based diet and refrain from all animal based products or by products are the only pure vegetarians also called vegans.. Veganism is not just a diet, it is a life-style of compassion. Compassion toward your own body (Health) by refraining from artery clogging, mind numbing animal based and processed foods from their diet. Compassion towards animals (Ethics) by not treating them as a property to be used and abused for our pleasure. Compassion towards our planet (Environment). Animal husbundary for both flesh and milk i.e. factory farming, creates havoc on our natural resources; land, water and air and is responsible for more greenhouse gases than all the automobiles in the world. In addition to diet, vegans do not consume or use any products or by-products involving animal cruelty like silk and fur as well as animal tested chemicals and cosmetics.

Important:Take some time to figure out for yourself, what group you will belong to when you become a vegetarian. You will want to consider all three, dietary, environmental and ethical reasons for choosing this lifestyle.
